ROSSCOT SPONSORS YOUNG STAR OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2015

Variety’s Young Star of the Year Awards took place on Sunday 11th October to recognise twenty deserving youngsters for their admirable achievements.

The awards showcased touching stories of kindness, skill and determination throughout Jersey’s young community. The Star Wars themed event was honoured by the attendance of its patrons Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl, and Lady McColl. Every youngster received a prize and this year Rosscot was proud to sponsor the finalists of the Young Academic Star of the Year. Isobel Kelly (16) and Fern Moolasiwa (14) each won co-operative vouchers worth £100 courtesy of the accountancy firm.

Isobel Kelly had been through a difficult period and had very low self-esteem when she started the Prince’s Trust ‘x1’ personal development and teamwork programme. She challenged herself to take part in group activities and became a valued member of the team. During the programme Isobel raised money by selling hand crafted wire hearts and managed her budget perfectly. She is proving to be a young entrepreneur in the making and her confidence is beginning to flourish.

Joint finalist, Fern Moolasiwa has been recognised for overcoming her language barrier and succeeding in school. Fern was born in Thailand and couldn’t speak a word of English when she moved to Jersey at the age of seven. She has had to work extra hard at school to reach her full potential and now speaks fluent English. This amazing achievement has secured Fern a place at Hautlieu school. Her school reports are excellent and she now even takes on the responsibility of helping her younger sister with homework.

Sean O’Flaherty, Director at Rosscot says:

‘We are so thrilled to sponsor such a proud and inspirational event. Isobel and Fern have overcome their challenges and shown tremendous determination. The Variety Awards are such a special way of recognising Jersey’s inspirational youngsters, as well as encouraging and nurturing their bright futures’.

Sandra Auckland, Chief Barker for Variety says:

‘Now in its sixth year, I remain touched and amazed by the many truly inspirational youngsters. An event like this wouldn’t be possible without our sponsors. We are so grateful for their contributions’.
